Grounded Spirituality: How the Universe Speaks to You Every Day

11 practical ways to recognize divine messages in your daily life—beyond meditation, rituals, and stillness

Grounded spirituality is about embracing your spiritual life as an aspect of who you are and understanding it’s part of your day-to-day existence.

If you’re anything like me, when I first considered spirituality, I thought it, and its related practices, were reserved for special occasions, such as moments of stillness, meditation, prayer, ritual, or any type of situation that engaged your soul. Many have the impression that our spiritual nature turns on for moments like these, and then it turns off when it’s over. I used to think that.

While it’s true that any type of spiritual practice creates a sense of stillness that opens up our connection to the divine—source, universe, god, goddess, or whatever term you’d like to use—it’s not always necessary to be still in order to connect, although it does require practice.

When I first reawakened to my spirituality, I had to go into a quiet practice, but as with anything, the more I practiced, the easier it got. Eventually, the connection was so natural that it happened easily in such a way that I became aware that my spiritual connection—my connection to source—is with me all the time and in every part of my day, from the moment I wake up one morning until the moment I wake up the next. It’s the same with all of us. Even in our dreams, we are connected, and perhaps more so than in our waking hours, but we are also connected when we shower, drive to work, have meetings, gather with our friends, or whenever.

The clearest “evidence” is the signs and messages we get. These messages don’t just come when we are still, meditating, praying, or entering a sacred space. If we are paying attention, we perceive them all the time, in many shapes and forms.

Grounded spirituality is about recognizing this: everything is sacred space. Of course, we receive visions, guidance, messages, knowings, and other things when we enter a sacred space, but we can begin to receive them in our day-to-day because everything is sacred space.

We can begin by recognizing that the universe is always communicating with us and sending us divine messages in mundane, grounded ways. From my experience, here are eleven grounded ways the universe sends us divine messages:

1. Conversations

The topic you are thinking about comes up in conversation where someone—anyone (stranger or known to you)—brings up the topic without you mentioning it.

2. Reading or Words

The topic you are thinking about comes up in something you read. Or you have been pondering a question and come across words that answer or provide guidance on it.

3. Visual Representation

As above, you think or question something, and you see a social media post, movie, show, documentary, advertisement, or any visual representation that echoes your thoughts or shows you the answer.

4. Numbers

Seeing repeating numbers or angel numbers is a sign from the universe. Numbers hold meaning, and you encounter these when you look at the time of day, dates, bills, receipts, or any type of numerical representation

5. Weather

Weather patterns can provide answers. For example, you think of something you should be moving forward with, and although it’s a cloudy day, the sun shines all of a sudden. Or it gets windy and shows you might need to work on clearing stagnant energy.

6. Nature

All elements of nature are connected with us and us with them. Trees, oceans, stones, animals, water, etc., carry meaning and messages. When I lived by the beach, I’d ask questions to the ocean, and with every breaking wave, the answer would come.

7. Cosmic Patterns

This is related to astrology and the phases of the moon. We’re all affected by them, whether we are aware of them or not. I connect deeply with the moon and its phases, and I sense how I am affected, but you don’t need to sense them in order to be affected. The more we pay attention, the more we can see that these support the cycles and patterns we face.

8. Tangible Tools

Various tools help ground spiritual messages, making them more practical and tangible. For example:

A) Journaling - reflect and contemplate an area affecting you at this time. I use stream-of-consciousness writing, and I often find that when I write down the thoughts in my mind without censoring, I get an answer to something I’ve been questioning.

B) Tarot and oracle decks - can provide guidance. Anyone who knows me knows I use decks all the time. Something as simple as a single card draw can provide direction.

C) Crystals - help and guide, especially when you build a relationship with them. Simply holding a crystal in your hand can bring clarity and healing.

D) Movement - intentional movements such as dancing, walking, yoga, or tai chi/chi qong, can bring clarity or insight into what is happening in your life.

9. Mundane Activities

The most unexpected circumstances can offer clues and guidance. Let’s say you are thinking about traveling to Egypt, and you see a pyramid on a t-shirt in a shop, or you see a car with the license plate of the state you’re planning on moving to.

10. The Body

One of the most grounded ways to receive messages is through your body. The body is the seat of the soul, and grounds our soul’s existence in this plane, at this time, and in this life. Our body is in constant communication with us through sensations, such as the openness we feel when something is good, like butterflies in the belly, or a lightness in the heart; and the tightness we feel when something isn’t right for us. In fact, aches, pains, soreness, and illness result from not paying attention to or addressing our needs. The less we pay attention, the more severe the illness becomes as it accumulates over time. It can even come to us from a previous life where it went unresolved. How long have we ignored the symptoms? Paying attention to the body is vital to how we connect and communicate with the universe.

11. Feelings and Emotions

These are felt through the body but are separate. They don’t have to be felt through the body, but it is important to allow them to express themselves, because when we don’t, they accumulate in the body and contribute to the ailments we feel. It’s important to recognize that we don’t control what we feel, but our feelings are clear indicators of what is going on at a deeper level; they are messages about what needs our attention or healing.

These are all general statements, and there is so much more and so many other ways the universe communicates with us, sending us divine messages in a grounded way. It’s important for each person to integrate them in their own way.

Only you can interpret and determine what a message is and how it’s delivered. Once you start paying attention, you see signs and messages everywhere, at any time, in a grounded, practical way.
