You’re Not Just a Writer—You’re a Brand (Here’s How to Own It)
How clarity, storytelling, and aligned branding can transform how readers see you
Author branding is more than marketing—it’s a reflection of who you are, what you write, and how you want to be seen.
As authors, our online image needs to reflect who we are because it affects how our readers view us. It’s hard to think about it because we only want to focus on the actual writing, but the reality is that we’re also responsible for our author identity and marketing. By going through this process a few times, I identified the lessons I learned. I am sharing them so you can implement them when you create your author branding and identity.
Be Clear On Who You Are
I am not a branding and marketing expert—I’m a fiction and poetry writer. I tell stories of self-discovery and self-development. When it’s fiction, it’s about characters. When it’s poetry or non-fiction, it’s about me. I also love food, travel, symbolism, spirituality, and all of these feature in my writing.
I have made a great investment in my personal journey. I earned a Doctorate in metaphysical sciences and became a Doctor of Divinity. I write about what I do and who I am. I have a grounded way of looking at life. I am grounded in my spirituality.
I spent most of my life wanting to be a writer but not giving myself permission to be one. My journey of becoming a writer has been one of self-discovery. I took the time to reclaim myself, and this is what I share. I write for anyone who loves reading fiction or poetry, for those who want to be seen and understood, and for those who want to read in a unique manner.
Seek Assistance
I don’t normally deal with designs and identity creation—unless, of course, it’s that of my characters. I sought the assistance of Rinei Bencilao, a marketing consultant. I contacted several marketing consultants, but Rinei and I were the best fit. We connected immediately; we were in sync with our ideas. She understood my love of nature and mirrored that in the logo design. Her concept was based on keywords she found on my blog: life journey, destination, and spirituality. My words triggered feelings and emotions in her.
Tell A Story Through Your Branding
My identity was about movement and evolution. Even so, there is a calmness and stillness in how I come across. The new logo is a double “S” circled upon each other to represent my initials as well as a wheel, flower, or mandala, depending on the viewer’s interpretation. The image gives a sense of fluidity. It has a touch of nature and symbolizes spirituality.
Life journey is about evolution and change, and even when and if we have a destination, we are in constant motion. What is more, our destination can change, and for that, we need to be aware of who we are. Our identity, background, and sense of self help awaken our spirituality, intuition, and direction forward.
Use Your Branding In Everything
The logo sits at the center of all my web pages; it’s in the banner of my email signature; it’s the basis for my social media memes; and it’s on my publishing venture and shop, Trust In Your Soul. I have also incorporated into the new program I created, Uncaged: Free Yourself. Reclaim Your Life. That program has its own branding, but the double “S” wheel is incorporated into the tagline’s design.
This logo represents who I am now. I’m not the same person I was when I started writing. I encourage all authors to ensure their current branding reflects who they are now to keep their image fresh and up to date.
I continue to evolve, and I know this update to my online presence won’t be the last, as I stay open to that growth as it comes.
